Gritty 1970s-style illustrative artwork of two anonymous conservation rangers beside a battered light aircraft, with a rhino in the distant landscape and a small red rose stitched onto a canvas flight bag. Original illustrative artwork, not documentary evidence.

The photograph usually begins at the end.

A dead rhino. The horn gone. Rangers arriving too late.

But poaching does not begin with a poacher.

It begins with a customer.

TRAFFIC identifies Viet Nam and China as the primary consumer markets for rhino horn. Save the Rhino says demand is driven by its use in traditional medicine and, increasingly, as a status symbol—an alleged remedy, an expensive gift or a display of wealth. Rhino horn has no proven medicinal benefit.

International trade in rhino horn has been banned since 1977. The horn is keratin, much like a hoof. Yet criminal networks have managed to turn it into something more valuable dead than the animal carrying it alive.

So let us point the finger accurately.

Not at every Chinese or Vietnamese person. At the buyers who create the demand. At the traders and smugglers who turn vanity into a supply chain. At corrupt links that let horn cross borders. At any government, platform or business willing to look away while the money keeps moving.

The person who pulls the trigger is guilty.

But the person who places the order pulled it first.

Fortunately, other people actually show up.

One Land – Love It’s 2026 profile says Michelle Hurley flies anti-poaching missions supporting endangered wildlife, particularly rhinos and pangolins. From the air, conservation stops being a word printed on a reusable shopping bag. It becomes fuel, radio calls, judgement—and the chance of reaching an animal before somebody else does.

Save the Rhino International works across protection, expertise, communities and efforts to disrupt illegal trade. Its official Get Involved page offers several direct routes, including volunteering, fundraising, membership and business participation.

HOW WE CAN HELP

Choose a route on Save the Rhino’s official Get Involved page. It is their page and their programme; The Rose Mission receives nothing and claims no partnership.

And when you share this issue, share the cause as well as the carcass:

Consumer demand. Illegal profit. Organised trafficking. A dead rhino.

Remove the demand and the chain begins to starve.
