The Bananas Have to Come from Somewhere

The everyday cost of caring for animals left behind by the exotic pet trade, and a direct way to help WildSide Exotic Rescue.

Original illustration of a battered wooden crate filled with bananas, apples and leafy greens beside an enamel feed bucket in a rural British feed room; an unidentifiable worker carries supplies toward a damp green yard, and a burgundy rose is stitched onto a hanging apron.
Image: original illustrative artwork, not documentary evidence. This is not a photograph of WildSide.

In a wooded valley, the animals still need feeding after the attention moves elsewhere. The food has to be bought. Enclosures have to be cleaned. Somebody has to show up tomorrow.

WildSide Exotic Rescue cares for wild animals caught up in the pet trade. Selling the idea of an unusual companion can take an afternoon. Providing that animal with a decent life is a much longer job. Funny how the invoice for that part so often lands with somebody else.

WildSide says it receives no government funding and relies on supporters. Its four holiday cottages also help fund the sanctuary. Those are practical answers to a problem that should not be hidden behind glossy photographs of exotic pets.

This is independent appreciation. The Rose Mission is pointing readers to the people doing the care; it does not speak for them.

I’ll leave you today with a line from Sam Cooke:

“A change is gonna come.”
